Thursday morning, I drug myself out of bed after being home from work the day before due to puking. My appointment was at 10am which I had to drive across Chicagoland to my appointment. I spent a great deal of time talking with our midwife, Amy about my severe puking that seemed to have gotten worse in the past two weeks. After checking my vitals, my blood pressure was normal and surprisingly I had gained 5 lbs from my last appointment at 12 weeks! I WAS SO HAPPY! Not sure how I managed to gain 5 lbs since I can't keep food down, except for this little growing creature surrounded with fluid that continues to increase as well. Side note: I got a message in my email from What To Expect.com informing me at 16 weeks that the amniotic fluid is actually excreted urine from the baby. The article said that the fluid is fully replaced within 24 hours as the baby drinks the fluid and excretes it as waste. Kinda gross, eh?
Anyway, Amy and I talked about the various things I have tried to minimize the nausea and vomiting, but she seemed very concerned about the severity and frequency of vomiting still at 16 weeks. We discussed some medical interventions which I am not thrilled about, but decided that I was at a point that I needed to be making some decisions about treatment since I was completely miserable. Reportedly, some of the make-ups in Unisom (sleep aid) contain an active ingredient that has been very successful in treatment nausea and vomiting for pregnant women. Granted, I was not excited about this option as I do not want to take a sleep aid or anything I don't have to while pregnant. Amy stated that Unisom is considered to be a Class B drug and is as safe as you can get with taking medication. I have read from several women on my due date club form (mothering.com) that taking Unisom was very helpful for controlling morning sickness (all day sickness). Amy also wrote a prescription for an anti-nausea medication that starts with a "P", but I can't remember the drug off the top of my head. We agreed that I would try the unisom for a few nights, evaluate the effectiveness and then decide if I should fill the prescription.
Thursday night, after work I stopped at the pharmacy to get the "right" Unisom with this so active ingredient. Let me tell you, I slept INCREDIBLY good Thursday night, groggy Friday morning, but I successfully kept EVERYTHING down!!! Today, is day 2 with Unisom. So far at 5pm, I haven't thrown up and feel pretty good actually. I'm going to try a 1/2 pill tonight because I'm really sleepy in the mornings. I figured the weekend is a good time to experiment with dosage in case the 1/2 dose isn't as effective.
I go back for my next appointment Nov 19 in which we will have another ultrasound and HOPE to find out the sex!!! :) I hope the baby is positioned right. Chris and I are having name discussions and believe we have names picked for a boy and girl. I had a dream the other night that the baby was a girl. Not sure if that is mother's instinct or wishful thoughts as I am REALLY hoping for a girl. :)
Chris and I need to get some more pictures up. My tummy is growing, but still don't feel like I look pregnant; especially wearing clothes. :)
