16 weeks

It's Monday morning, which seems to be dreadful to most of us. :) Maybe it's even more dreadful when you have a fun weekend and a stressful week ahead. We had a great and wonderful visitor this weekend, Benjamin R. Graves; Chris's friend/roommate/buddy from college. It is always such a pleasure to spend time with Ben. The exciting part of the weekend was Chris was ADAMANT about waiting until this weekend before telling Ben that we were pregnant because he thought it would be better to tell him in person. So, the story is as follows:

We picked Ben up at his friend's house in Villa Park where he had spent Friday evening. We brought Ben back to our house to drop off his belongings and grab dinner as we were planning to meet up with Cyndi Saturday evening. I had previously arranged our living room coffee table with the What To Expect When You are Expecting, a magazine from the midwife As Your Baby Grows (which has real pictures of a fetus growing and developing each month of pregnancy), the baby journal we purchased to record all the exciting things that happen pre-baby and post-baby, and the pee stick (Yes, I still have the pee stick and I know some of you may think it's completely and totally gross. However, it was in a plastic ziplock bag and I don't plan to throw it out). So, Chris comes into the living room, sits down and the couch and Ben follows. I ran upstairs because I was having a difficult time containing my excitement and was worried I was going to blow it. Ben walks into the living room, looks at the coffee table, and says, "Are you planning or expecting?" Chris says, "We're pregnant!" Ben says, "Really?" (thinking to himself as he quoted, "You better not be pulling my leg Bandstra.") At that point, I came down the stairs and it was a happy moment. Oh and I must add, that we had to cancel our plans with Cyndi because I was worried I was going to puke.

Ben has been hoping and discussing ALL weekend that he wants the baby to come three weeks early and specifically on March 21, 2009 because that is HIS birthday! I'm not so keen on that as my due date is April 10 and I'd like Baby Bandstra to cook as long as possible. Oh, and Ben requested that I comment on the blog that he is betting on a "heavy seven lb baby".

Alright, so it's back to Monday morning and I'm slowly trying to get breakfast down. I threw up EVERY morning last week and I'm trying really hard to keep all this down. Recently, I have learned to love ham, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches on toast. It seems to settle really well, fill me up, and I get the protein which is great for me. I went all of Saturday and Sunday without puking, which is great! I'm just hoping I will go into a several day stretch of this until it's gone as I'm now 16 weeks!

I go to the doctor on Thursday for my monthly follow-up appointment. I've got a list of questions that keep coming up and I haven't been dedicated enough to write them all down. So, I need to work on that this week. The baby is getting bigger and is about 4.5in long right now. Last week, it was the size of an orange, but I haven't gotten my weekly email yet to give you a size comparison to a fruit. :) My regular pants are slowly getting too small, but I'm finding ways to manage. I'm hoping that as my uterus moves up, some of my low-rise pants might fit. However, I'm wanting to check out maternity pants as everyone talks about how comfortable they are. I'm outgrowing all my shirts which is becoming really annoying for work as I tend to just become angry in the mornings when I get dressed. I'd prefer to just wear a sweatshirt.

I don't know if I've already commented on this as many people are asking. We do plan to find out the sex of the baby. I'm hoping that in the next week or so, we'll have our 20 week ultrasound scheduled, which should happen right around thanksgiving. Hopefully, the week before so we can announce the sex to family at Thanksgiving. According to everything I've been reading, at 16 weeks, the baby's genitalia begins to distinguish between male and female. Up until 16 weeks, it all looks the same. However, I read that very early the sex is determined, but the genitalia just doesn't distinguish itself until later. I'm hoping for a girl; Chris wants a boy. So, we'll see.

I'm realizing I need to end this as I need to get moving for the morning as much as I don't want to.
